In late September 2024, Hurricane Helene brought devastating flooding and landslides to Western North Carolina, cutting off power, water, and communication across the region.
During the crisis, Blue Ridge Public Radio News became a true lifeline—delivering round-the-clock coverage with official briefings, live reporting, and critical updates on roads, flooding, landslides, and access to potable water, in both English and Spanish. Their work has since earned national recognition.
There’s also good news for listeners: BPR’s Classic signal has been significantly improved thanks to a new transmitter on High Top Mountain, restoring coverage lost during “The Big Switch” in 2022.
- In Asheville: Tune to 90.5 FM for much stronger reception
- In Mars Hill: 107.9 FM may still come in better
