About TYJL:
Triangle Youth Jazz Lab provides beginning jazz ensemble training with the goal of eventual transition to our more advanced ensembles. Beginning jazz students with at least two years of experience and instruction on their instrument will learn how to play with jazz style and sensibility, how to play simple improvisation, and improve their instrumental technique. In addition, they will learn what to listen for when listening to professional jazz recordings, how to play songs from memory and by ear, and how to function in a jazz group

Areas of Responsibility:
• Conduct weekly rehearsals on Sundays from 12:15-1:15 at North Carolina State University
• Select repertoire with consultation with the other jazz directors
• Prepare and send music to students in advance of rehearsals
• Work closely with parent volunteers and administrative team to ensure smooth operations and discuss new registrations/attendance issues.
• Provide weekly communications to the ensemble
• Support the artistic vision of Triangle Youth Music
• Respond to musicians, parents and administrative team promptly
• Attend artistic staff meetings up to 8 times per year
• Participate in jazz auditions in August each year


Preferred Qualifications:
• Proficiency on one or more instruments with the ability to improvise
• Knowledge of jazz repertoire, styles, and history
• Experience working with student musicians of various ages and abilities
• Some pedagogical professional experience
• Ability to pass a background check
