Hudson Memorial Presbyterian Church (USA) is a warm and engaged 650-member congregation located in the heart of Midtown Raleigh in North Carolina. The congregation’s mission is, “To Know, Love and Serve God in Jesus Christ.” Our vision is, “A Community Enriched by Responding to the Wonder of God.”

Hudson was founded in 1957 and for 64 years, committed worship, faith formation, congregational care and fellowship have led our participants out into the world to love and serve our neighbor. The church has 14 staff members as well as a preschool with over 160 students and more than 35 teachers.

Hudson is a part of the largest Presbyterian denomination in the country (PCUSA – 1.3 million members and 9000 congregations) and values being a part of the Reformed Protestant tradition. Through the years Hudson has maintained a vibrant and active music ministry. We seek a full-time Director of Music Ministry who is called by God to confidently lead us into the future. The music program includes a 35-member chancel choir, a handbell choir, youth musicians and a children’s music program.

PURPOSE:

To engage the ministry of the Gospel through music, by leading the musical expression of the congregation and aiding the artistic development of the participants.

POSITION TYPE:

This is a full-time position (exempt employee) reporting to the Pastor/Head of Staff. Flexible hours may be necessary depending on the type of worship, season and musical programs planned.

POSITION SUMMARY:

Plan and direct all aspects of the church music program including, but not limited to, activities of the Chancel Choir, Handbell Choir, Youth Musicians and Children’s Music Program for the presentation of music in the life of Hudson Memorial Presbyterian Church

RESPONSIBILITIES:

A. Worship

  • Work with Pastoral Staff to plan and direct appropriate music for all worship services and programs, both online and in person
  • Conduct and lead musical ensembles and individuals in their worship ministry through song
  • Develop appropriate multimedia presentations to enhance the music ministry

B. Music Leadership

  • Provide leadership and oversight for all choirs and ensembles:
    • Adult Chancel Choir
    • Adult Handbell Choir
    • Youth Musicians
    • Children’s Music Program (Joyful Noise)
  • Purchase appropriate music and curate an extensive library of sacred music
  • Programming for special occasions, including inviting guest artists to perform
  • Promote opportunities for church members and other community members to share their musical gifts in worship, outreach, and fellowship
  • Develop other vocal and instrumental ensembles using the talents of the HMPC membership
  • Attend to the spiritual nurture and development of the members of the Chancel Choir, the Handbell Choir, and other adult musicians
  • In collaboration with other ministry and church staff, promote musical opportunities in worship for children and youth, particularly in choral singing
  • Develop the musical gifts of participants in Music Ministries
  • Actively participate in the recruitment of members for the Chancel Choir, Handbell Choir and other musical ensembles.

C. Administration

  • Communication and coordination of musical activities
  • Serve on the Worship Committee as staff liaison
  • Provide leadership and support for the work of the Chancel Choir officers
  • Attend weekly staff meetings
  • Supervise members of the music staff: pianist/organist and children’s choir director
  • Oversee care and maintenance of church instruments and appropriate equipment, including organ and pianos

QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION:

  • An abiding love of and faith in God, and a desire to express the same through music
  • Bachelor’s Degree from accredited college or university with a concentration in Music or Voice
  • Minimum of 2-years’ experience leading a music program and/or working as a church musician
  • Experience directing choirs and vocal ensembles
  • Keyboard skills are desirable
