SUMMARY:2019 NCMEA Professional Development Conference
DESCRIPTION:The NCMEA Conference takes over downtown Winston-Salem for 3 ½ days of sessions\, clinics and concerts scheduled in the Benton Convention Center\, the Embassy Suites\, the Marriott and Stevens Center.  \nThe more than 1\,500 attendees are music educators that teach K-12 as well as at the college/university level. We also have several hundred collegiate members attend. This number does not include the students that hail from all over North Carolina that won auditions for a place in of the NCMEA Honors Ensembles: Elementary Honors Chorus\, Middle School Honors Chorus\, High School Honors Chorus and Honors Orchestra. Each NCMEA Section also invites middle school and high school ensembles from around the State that showcase the best in band\, choral\, jazz and orchestra music. \nNCMEA Conference also hosts a music industry trade show with more than 100 vendors. Exhibitors include nationally known instrument companies and music publishers as well as vendors from North Carolina. DESCRIPTION:A Teaching Guitar Workshop will be held in Cornelius\, NC\, at Bailey Middle School June 17-21\, 2019. This is one of 23 workshops being held nationwide and the only one in NC this summer. \nInterested teachers should register at: http://www.guitaredunet.org/. \nThe Teaching Guitar Workshops were started by members of GAMA\, NAMM and NAfME in 1995. The objective: help school music educators start or enhance classroom guitar programs and deliver more music making opportunities to children. \nBetween 1995 – 2012 over 3000 school music across the United States and Canada have enjoyed this TGW. GAMA’s studies suggest that over 500\,000 students have learned guitar in schools because of the TGW. \nTeachers: \n\nClassroom guitar teachers attract new students to music education.\nGuitar can fill up a teaching schedule.\nMusic education is in demand and recruiting is easy.\nGuitar programs are inexpensive to start and maintain.\nMany teachers report increased job security since starting guitar programs.\n\nStudents: \n\nClassroom guitar programs attract kids who were not previously involved in school music. Guitar programs have also helped “at-risk” kids get more involved in school and improve their performance.
