SUMMARY:Keynote: Mickey Smith Jr - "See the Sound"
DESCRIPTION:Benton Convention Center\nSalem Ballroom 2\nAny teacher can know all the latest techniques\, plan the greatest lessons\, and implement effective classroom management strategies. But what is your “sound?” Your “sound” is your value as well as the unique personal significance you bring to the classroom. Maximizing your awareness and perspective in those you teach and seeing the “sound” in yourself is arguably the most important skill you can possess as a teacher. Without a strong sense of personal significance and emotional resilience\, most teachers won’t stick around long enough in the profession to realize their potential and become not just teachers but phenomenal educators. In a profession that loses 50% of its workforce within the first five years of their careers\, and with teacher shortage estimates in the hundreds of thousands yearly for qualified teachers\, it is critical now more than ever to find new ways to encourage\, equip\, and empower teachers to fall in love with teaching. That starts by seeing the “sound.”

Posters and visual media will be available to all conference attendees during a dedicated research poster session on Monday\, November 6. Researchers are expected to engage with attendees about their research during this dedicated hour. Complete instructions and specifications for posters and/or visuals will be sent to accepted presenters. \nThe committee invites research\, either completed or in progress\, that relates to teaching and learning music. Researchers selected for the session will have five to eight minutes to present a PechaKucha-style lightning talk on their research\, with an additional five minutes reserved for feedback and discussion with active faculty and researchers in music education. Research projects may be in-progress or recently completed. Presenters should be current music education students\, or those who have completed a degree program and research project within the past year. The committee invites research\, either completed or in progress\, that relates to teaching and learning music. \nComplete instructions and specifications for presentations will be sent to accepted presenters. Applicants who are not accepted for a lightning talk may elect to have their project considered for the traditional research poster session. \n\nSubmission Information\nFor either a poster or lightning talk\, researchers should provide an abstract of no more than 500 words that provides an overview of the research goals\, questions\, methods\, findings\, and implications. Research that is in progress may include preliminary findings and potential implications. Abstracts should be saved in a Microsoft Word (.doc or .docx) document or PDF\, and must be e-mailed as an attachment to research_chair@ncmea.net with the subject line “NCMEA Research Submission.” In the body of the e-mail\, please include the project title\, author(s)\, institutional affiliations\, e-mail addresses\, and a contact phone number. \nFor lightning talk submissions\, please indicate whether you would like to be considered for the traditional poster session if you are not accepted for a lightning talk. \nAll projects\, abstracts\, and proposals must conform to the ethical research standards of the American Psychological Association (APA) and the NAfME Society for Research in Music Education. \n\nSubmission Deadline and Timeline for Acceptance\nSubmissions must be received by Friday\, September 15\, 2023\, 11:59pm EDT.
