DESCRIPTION:NCMEA invites session proposals to be submitted for consideration for the 2025 NCMEA Professional Development Conference in Winston-Salem\, NC on November 8-11\, 2025. Conference participants come from all educational levels and include K-12 students and teachers\, pre-service collegiates\, and higher education faculty in the fields of general music\, band\, chorus\, jazz\, orchestra\, guitar\, piano\, popular music\, and music technology. \nWe invite proposals that cultivate a vision of music education that is inclusive\, collaborative\, and expansive\, keeping in mind the ideals set forth by NCMEA’s strategic framework: \n\nReflect diversity in our profession and represent the wide and changing spectrum of our population. This representation may include various cultures\, abilities\, economic backgrounds\, and gender identities;\nDevelop leadership to advocate for music education in the classroom\, in school programs\, and in the community and represent current trends in education policy at the local\, state\, and federal level;\nProvide opportunities for all students to create\, perform\, respond\, and connect to various styles of music;\nEnhance music teaching through combining effective and dynamic new practices with proven strategies.\n\nThe deadline for submission is February 28\, 2025 at 11:59pm EST. Pepper is turning 150\, and we can think of no better way to celebrate than by empowering students across the U.S. to teach music. Our landmark scholarship program awards 52 scholarships for students entering their first year of college as a music education major. $3\,000 scholarships will be awarded to one student recipient from each state\, plus a student from Washington\, D.C.\, and another for a student from the U.S. territories. The top scholar of all 52 recipients will be awarded a $10\,000 scholarship! Meet members of the AI Task Force and learn from their insights on AI and music education\, what AI is\, and why it won’t replace you. \nThis town hall will include a panel discussion\, a short presentation on why AI won’t replace you\, and a breakout room discussion opportunity facilitated by AI Task Force members. DESCRIPTION:Do you have a rock ensemble or students who are interested in playing popular music in a rock band? Are you looking for opportunities to support their musical growth outside the school? This year\, NCMEA will be sponsoring a new event called “SoundForge: A Popular Music Collective.” SoundForge is a youth-based popular music collective that offers a unique opportunity for aspiring musicians to showcase their original music. \nThe event will include hands-on experiences for musicians to work alongside experienced singer/songwriters and learn how to shape their original sound. Attendees will perform their music in front of an enthusiastic audience\, while also experiencing clinics where they will receive an opportunity to learn technical and songwriting skills from singer/songwriters! The experience provides an immersive opportunity for young musicians to develop their talents and gain valuable insights into the music industry. Any popular music groups are encouraged to apply. \nThe event will be hosted at the University of North Carolina Wilmington on February 3rd\, 2024. Cost is $150 per school. The presenters will share examples and key factors for building sustainable music programs in small schools and provide guidance on how music teachers can provide quality music education in small schools today and into the future. \nPresenter Daniel Johnson\, (second from left) is a professor at the University of North Carolina Wilmington\, where he coordinates undergraduate and graduate studies in music education.
