IT TAKES A VILLAGE
Attending after school dance, soccer, art classes and more is a common practice for many families in our society. But for many others the cultural practice of after school enrichment is out of reach and a foreign experience. Over the last four years, a local ballet school, Bonita’s School of Ballet in Monroe, NC has supported the growth of our Benton Heights Elementary students by giving hundreds of scholarships to our students to attend weekly ballet classes. Each year twenty-five scholarships are awarded to first and second grade students to attend weekly classes. Because our older students had not had previous dance experience and could not easily join their age group in her regular classes, she created a special class for twenty-five 4th and 5th grade students. These students are bussed after school to her studio to attend a program designed specially for them. This past year she mounted a full production of ‘The Wizard of Oz’ on them as their final performance with five changes in set design! In addition, an all boys class was held on the schools campus. At years end, statistics showed that those attending this class made the highest growth on the EOG test. Graciously she provided ballet clothes and shoes, costumes, translated her policies into Spanish and worked with cultural challenges of behavior and helped them learn dance ettiquitte. With over $50,000.00 dollars worth of scholarships already, she continues to growth these programs, while asking nothing in return. Bonita’s School of Ballet is an outstanding example of how local arts organizations can work together to create a rich and powerful community experience for those families who do not have the resources to supplement their children’s education.
