Music Teachers Workshop Announcement:

Teaching Music Literacy – Developing the Independent Musician

Dr. Carol Krueger

July 21 – 23, 2008

Hello Music Educator!

I am excited to announce that this summer Buncombe County will be offering a workshop just for music educators. Dr. Krueger will be offering her techniques in a 3 day workshop at Cane Creek Middle School. I attended this workshop last summer and walked away with a whole new concept of how to TEACH. See what the following choral directors had to say!

"I have always been afraid of solfege, let alone teaching it, but now I personally see all the benefits of it. The rhythmic syllables are also a great way to teach rhythm as opposed to the "math point of view."

Michelle Sullivan, North Wilkes High School

"This workshop is the most practical application of a tier curriculum I have ever experienced in the music field. I believe I have the tools organized for my students to be better readers and musicians."

Patti Fulk, Surry Central High School

"The music literacy workshop has been great! It has been better than anything I have had in years, maybe ever, including college! I am going to redo my way of teaching!"

Fritzie Wise, Tuscola High School

Music Literacy Workshop Goals

This activity-based workshop will focus on three main goals:

  • Developing musical literacy and musicianship/
  • Building vocal tone.
  • Developing vocal technique (harmony skills) in the choral rehearsal.
  • Music educators will learn practical and positive ideas and techniques for cultivating music reading, audiation, dictation, elementary composition, musical memory and aural skills. Participants will explore how we ‘learn’ music, be given specific techniques for developing reading readiness and tonal, rhythmic and melodic literacy, and be presented with teaching strategies and techniques for integrating and applying reading skills to choral literature. Materials and teaching strategies will illustrate how the State and National Music Standards can be put into action in the music classroom.

I encourage you to attend. Learning these methods have made me a better teacher. Meeting new teachers and learning together will definitely be fun and will give you a great jump start to a new year! Hope to see you there!!!
